Governing Board
Welcome to the Governors’ page where you can find out more about us and our work.
Who are we?
We are all volunteers who are interested in the school and in education and who want to help the school achieve its aims and vision.
- Co-opted Governors – Most governors are co-opted, appointed for having some experience which the Governing Board members believe will help their work. That experience may be in their knowledge of the local community or in the skills they have.
- Local Authority Governor – Birmingham City Council nominates one governor for appointment. They will be put forward based on the skills they bring to the school.
- Parent Governors – We have two parent governors, elected by the parents at the school. They have the same responsibilities as other governors, but bring the viewpoint of the parents to the Governing Board. Their responsibility is to act in the best interests of the school and all children, regardless of their own interests.
- Staff Governor – A staff governor is elected by school staff to bring their perspective to discussions by the Board.
- The Head Teacher is automatically a governor and the Deputy Head Teacher joins us as an Associate Governor, with voting rights on committees but not on full board matters.
What do we do?
The full Governing Board meets every term. Some responsibilities are delegated to the Finance and Site, Curriculum and Human Resources committees, which individual governors join depending on their interests and skills. Governors also visit during normal school days for example to see teaching in action, talk to staff and pupils, learn about how policies and strategies are being implemented in practice, for discussions on specific areas with staff, and for the end of term Governor Assemblies and other events.
Our focus is on strategy and accountability, with legislation setting out our core functions as ensuring:
- that the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school are clearly defined;
- that the headteacher performs their responsibilities for the educational performance of the school;
- the sound, proper and effective use of the school’s financial resources.
This means that we work closely with the Head Teacher and Leadership Team. We review policies, look at financial and classroom data, and review strategic decisions and vision. Individual governors report back to the governing body on areas such as Safeguarding, SEND and Pupil Premium.
Most importantly we try to ask challenging questions to help the Leadership Team make the decisions which are best for the school. We do not get involved in the day to day running of the school and questions about a child or day to day issues will usually be taken up with the classroom teacher or Head Teacher in the first instance.
Vacancies for Parent Governors are notified within school and other governor vacancies can be found on the school website. Do get in touch if you are interested or would like more information.
